12 Days of Christmas Day 12: The Christmas Pickle

Welcome to the final day of the 12 Days of Christmas, today we are talking about the Christmas Pickle.

My husband is a First Generation Canadian, His Mother's side is from the UK and his Father's Side is from Germany. We honor so many Christmas Traditions from the UK (one's I didn't even realize were from the UK until I started actually doing research) Christmas Crackers, Christmas Pudding, Mince Meat pies, etc., but I wanted to honor more from the German side too, we already did Advent Calendars, so in comes the Christmas Pickle. We jumped on the Christmas Pickle the moment I laid eyes on the Beautiful Glass Decoration in the store. (I love pickles, and dill pickle is one of my favourite flavors, so why wouldn't I naturally love a pickle decoration)

It has been said that the Christmas Pickle had originated in Germany It turns out that today in Modern Germany, most don't know about the Christmas Pickle. They are sold in many places with the legend attached, but that's just it. There is no conclusive proof that it did or did not originate in Germany. There are so many stories of where it originate from. Right on the package there is a beautiful story about where the pickle originated from. Even if there is no truth to it, it seemed like too great a tradition to pass up.

They say that the Pickle is the last ornament to be hung on the tree, hidden deep within the boughs. Christmas morning the first Child to find the pickle receives a special present, the first adult to find the pickle will have good fortune in the coming year. The idea of stopping to take in the sights of the tree in search of the lucky pickle is heart warming. Life moves too fast these days, so slowing down to admire the beauty of the tree, in search of pickle is something I cherish.

Every year on Christmas Eve since I bought my first Christmas Pickle ornament I have hidden it somewhere on the tree, I love watching my Son play a game of Eye spy to find the Pickle hidden among the other ornaments. I usually have a small gift which we give to him once he finds it. Sometimes it's a small holiday envelope with some money in it, or a special Christmas Sweet Treat.

We continue this tradition today, no matter where it originated from or who started it, it's one of our quirky traditions that both young and old can enjoy. Sadly my glass pickle ornament is lost somewhere in storage, but I have a shatter proof back up I bought at none other than the Dollar store.

We will continue to do the Christmas Pickle, and add other traditions from our European Roots over the years. This year the Christmas Pickle will travel with us and be hidden in my parents tree, I can't wait to introduce the Christmas Pickle to them.

What are some weird Traditions you do?

  1. My son is two, but this is his third Christmas and we've lived in a different place each year so we have no traditions! Guess it's time to start one, don't know if I'll go with a pickle though. :)

  12. So many have the Christmas pickle tradition! We don't have any odd traditions but have a few our family loves each year. Our elf always delivers pajamas on Christmas Eve morning for us to wear later that night.
